Master Mandarin with ICLS
Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world by number of native speakers, and its importance in international trade, diplomacy, and culture continues to grow. In Malaysia, where Mandarin is already spoken by a significant portion of the population, the ability to communicate effectively in Mandarin is a powerful asset — whether you are doing business with Chinese partners, navigating daily life in a multicultural environment, or preparing for study or work in China, Taiwan, or Singapore.
ICLS has offered Mandarin lessons since our earliest years, and our programme has been refined over decades to deliver practical results. Our curriculum follows the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) framework, the standardised test of Mandarin proficiency recognised by educational institutions and employers worldwide. Students progress through clearly defined levels, from recognising basic characters and tones to reading newspapers, writing formal correspondence, and participating in complex professional discussions.
One of the greatest challenges of learning Mandarin is mastering the tonal system. Mandarin uses four tones plus a neutral tone, and getting these right is essential for being understood. Our instructors dedicate significant time to pronunciation training, using audio drills, minimal pair exercises, and one-on-one correction to help students develop accurate tonal habits from the start. We find that students who build a strong tonal foundation early on progress much faster through the later levels.
Character recognition and writing form another pillar of our programme. We teach simplified Chinese characters using a systematic approach that groups characters by radicals and stroke patterns, making the memorisation process more logical and sustainable. Students begin writing characters by hand to build muscle memory, then progress to digital input methods that are used in professional settings. By the intermediate levels, students are reading authentic materials including short stories, business emails, and social media posts.
For professionals, our Business Mandarin modules address the specific language needs of the corporate world. Topics include formal greetings and banquet etiquette, contract negotiation vocabulary, teleconference language, and the cultural conventions that underpin Chinese business relationships. These modules are available as add-ons to the general programme or as standalone workshops for corporate groups.
Conversational fluency is emphasised at every level. Our lessons incorporate pair work, group discussions, situational role-plays, and multimedia activities to keep students actively using the language throughout each session. We want you to leave every class having spoken more Mandarin than you thought possible.
