Mandarin Chinese may look daunting at first glance, but the truth is that a small set of high-frequency phrases can carry you surprisingly far in everyday conversation. Whether you are visiting China, Taiwan or Malaysia's vibrant Chinese-speaking communities, these ten expressions will help you connect with native speakers from day one.

1. Nǐ hǎo (你好) — Hello

The universal Chinese greeting. Literally meaning "you good", it works in virtually every social situation — meeting someone for the first time, greeting a shopkeeper, or starting a phone call. Pair it with a smile and you are already making a positive impression.

2. Xièxie (谢谢) — Thank you

Gratitude goes a long way in any culture, and Mandarin is no exception. Use xièxie after receiving a service, a compliment or a gift. For extra politeness, add nǐ at the end: xièxie nǐ.

3. Qǐng (请) — Please

Whether you are ordering food or asking for directions, prefixing your request with qǐng adds a layer of courtesy. Think of it as the Mandarin equivalent of "please" and "may I".

4. Duìbuqǐ (对不起) — Sorry / Excuse me

This phrase covers apologies as well as polite interruptions. Bumped into someone on the street? Duìbuqǐ. Need to get past someone in a narrow aisle? Duìbuqǐ works there too.

5. Zǎoshàng hǎo (早上好) — Good morning

A warm morning greeting that signals respect and friendliness. Use it with colleagues, neighbours or anyone you meet during the early hours of the day.

6. Rènshi nǐ hěn gāoxìng (认识你很高兴) — Nice to meet you

Perfect for introductions in both casual and professional settings. This phrase literally translates to "knowing you is very happy" — a beautifully direct sentiment.

7. Wǒ tīng bù dǒng (我听不懂) — I don't understand

An essential survival phrase for beginners. Rather than nodding along in confusion, saying wǒ tīng bù dǒng signals to the speaker that they need to slow down or rephrase.

8. Duōshao qián? (多少钱?) — How much?

Shopping at a market, hailing a taxi, or checking a restaurant bill — this phrase will serve you dozens of times a day during any trip to a Mandarin-speaking region.

9. Wǒ jiào... (我叫...) — My name is...

Self-introduction is one of the first things you learn in any language class, and Mandarin keeps it refreshingly simple. Just say wǒ jiào followed by your name.

10. Zàijiàn (再见) — Goodbye

Literally "see again", zàijiàn is the standard farewell. It carries an optimistic undertone — you are not just leaving, you are promising to meet once more.

Putting It All Together

Language acquisition thrives on repetition and real-world practice. Try using one or two of these phrases each day — greet your Chinese-speaking colleague with nǐ hǎo, thank the hawker stall uncle with xièxie, or introduce yourself at a community event with wǒ jiào. Before long, these phrases will roll off your tongue without a second thought.
